GET INVOLVED. TAKE ACTION!

FLAVOR BANS ARE COMING UP

San Leandro, Oakland, San Francisco, Los Gatos, Palo Alto

If you are a small business owner affected by these “flavor bans” we urge you to be at these hearings and voice your opposition. If you are a vaper and feel strongly about how this amazing technology has improved your life, please get involved. Reach out to the city council members and supervisors and explain to them why including vapor under their proposed ordinance is a bad idea.

SAN FRANCISCO

Next Wednesday, June 14th at 10:30am, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors Public Safety Committee will meet to take public comments and hear debate on a proposed ordinance that would ban the sale of smoke-free tobacco and nicotine products in flavors other than tobacco. San Francisco is not the first municipality to consider such an extreme law and it won’t be the last.

SAN LEANDRO

On Monday June 5th at 7:00 PM the San Leandro City Council will be considering an ordinance that would ban the sale of all flavored e-liquid in the city. Not only will this put small businesses in the vapor industry out of business it will make it impossible for you, as a vaper, to purchase your e-liquid at your favorite stores. It is crucial that you voice your opposition to this ordinance. Respectfully let the City Council know that you do not appreciate this hostility to your small business and that as consumers of vapor products they are interfering with YOUR chosen way in which you decided to quit smoking!

Immediately call or e-mail your San Leandro City Council members and also let them know via social media that you oppose this “flavor police” action they are considering. If you can, request a meeting and explain how this ordinance would impact you.

WHAT HAPPENED IN OAKLAND

Recently on May 9th at 4:00PM the “Life Enrichment Committee” had a hearing on a “smoking” prevention ordinance in order to “protect” the children from flavored tobacco products, including flavored e-liquid and vapor products.

Simply put, Oakland wants to ban flavors.

The full video of the hearing is available by clicking the image below.

Please don’t make my mommy a casualty on YOUR war on smoking! It was difficult enough for her to quit and now that she has found a safe alternative you are only going to encourage her to go back to smoking. You say you do this to protect the children but who will protect my mommy from an early death related to smoking?

People are right when they say this is a health concern. It is a major health concern for those of us who are trying to quit smoking cigarettes and combustible tobacco by vaping. There are millions of vapers who were finally able to quit smoking because of this amazing technology. Why would ANYONE want to make it harder for someone to quit smoking?

The small mom and pop stores and small manufacturers are NOT the “Big Tobacco” boogeyman you are being led to believe. They don’t defend smoking. They have no ties with “Big Tobacco” and do not sell products made by them. These small business owners and their employees are your neighbors, friends and members of this community just like you are. Most of them just wanted everyone else to have access to this life saving technology.

The city is not an island. If someone really wants to purchase vapor products all they have to do is go into a neighboring city or county and bring their vapor products back here to use. Shutting off a source of sales tax makes no sense. It makes no sense from a public health perspective.

Vape shops will be disproportionately affected by this ordinance. Vapor products are their bread and butter while providing a much safer alternative to smoking to those who need it. It will be impossible to do business when the sale of flavored products are prohibited.

As a result all these retail stores will either move elsewhere or, more likely, shut down completely. That is a burden on their customers and their employees.

We used to smoke every day. But thanks to the ability to vape, we kicked the habit of smoking and are feeling healthier than we used to when we still smoked. This ordinance will make it harder for me to do that today, and will make it much harder for other people struggling with smoking and wishing to kick that habit. We would like to see our grandchildren grow up, graduate, and be around for them. That’s why we vape fruit and candy flavored products, not the tobacco flavor that only reminds us of what we finally have managed to kick.

I’m an adult. I like flavors. I used to smoke and now I vape. I vape flavored products to keep myself from going back to smoking combustible tobacco. It does not help public health if you seek to “protect” children by treating us, the parents, as children.

WHO ARE WE?

THE TRUTH ABOUT SPECIAL INTERESTS

WHAT ARE WE?

We are a lot of things but most of all we share three key characteristics.

And perhaps even more importantly, we are also…

VOTERS

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?

FOR OURSELVES

  • Because we don’t want to go back to smoking.

  • Because we want to be there for our children and their children.

  • Because we are over 9 million people with first hand experience.

  • Because those around us appreciate that we’re not blowing smoke.

  • Because nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and pharmaceuticals did not work for us.

  • Because we refuse to be cash cows used to fill gaps in government budgets.

  • Because we are a strong community and a support system that smokers haven’t had in the past.

FOR OTHERS

  • Because over 36 million smokers deserve a less harmful alternative to smoking.

  • Because we don’t want our parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles to die prematurely.

  • Because we don’t want to see more suicides as a result of using dangerous pharmaceuticals.

  • Because we have a real chance for the first time ever to obsolete the traditional cigarette.
  • Because we don’t want you to be mislead by so-called public health organizations.

  • Because we feel strongly about consumer choice.

Vape Flavor Ban Threatens San Francisco’s Legacy of Harm Reduction

June 8th, 2017|

Unfortunately, an ordinance recently proposed by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors (and sadly replicated by other communities in the Bay area) threatens this legacy as a center for liberal and humane harm reduction policies. Following San Francisco, Oakland, San Leandro, Los Gatos, Palo Alto and Contra Costa County are now all considering legislation that would ban the sale of flavored vapor products available to adult smokers and vapers. The proposals are shortsighted and run counter to efforts to reduce smoking-related disease. Vapor products or “e-cigarettes” contain no tobacco and produce no toxic smoke, so the products provide a considerably [...]

Don’t include vaping in bans on flavored-tobacco sales

June 8th, 2017|

In their view, smokers should abstain, or embrace those medically approved cessation devices (gum, patches and prescription drugs) that appeal to only a small number of smokers. The whole approach reminds one of journalist H.L. Mencken’s definition of Puritanism: “The haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy.” Former smokers take pleasure in vaping, as they break the habit. It’s far more enjoyable to sit on the patio and puff an e-cigarette than wear a nicotine patch. That no doubt infuriates the anti-tobacco zealots. I admit that I don’t like the flavored bans for a variety of reasons, centered on [...]

California needs to think twice about banning flavored e-cigarettes

June 6th, 2017|

Nor can it be because flavored products keep big tobacco in business. Quite the opposite: global revenues of combustible cigarettes, which are not a part of these bans, are valued at approximately $700 billion annually, while the e-cigarette market has global revenues of less than 1 percent of that total. Vape shops (of which San Francisco currently has only eight), rely on flavored e-cigarettes to remain profitable. Instead, flavor bans are aimed at people who smoke flavored cigarettes, of which menthol is the most prevalent. Taking away the option to have any flavor, other than traditional non-mentholated combustible cigarettes, probably [...]
